At an Arria- formula UNSC meeting, Pakistan stressed that weakening treaties like the Indus Waters Treaty threatens global peace and cooperation.
NEW YORK: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Jan,31, 2026) Pakistan convened an important meeting at the United Nations Security Council focused on the sanctity of treaties and the preservation of international peace. Along with Security Council members, UN member states from all regions of the world participated in the session.
Held under the Arria-formula format of the UN Security Council, the meeting was titled “Upholding the Sanctity of Treaties for the Maintenance of International Peace and Security.”
A panel of distinguished experts briefed participants. The panel included David Nanopoulos, Head of the Treaty Section at the UN Office of Legal Affairs; Ahmer Bilal Soofi, President of the Research Society of International Law and former Federal Law Minister of Pakistan; Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, President of the International Peace Institute and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; and Professor Adil Najam of Boston University’s Pardee school of Global Studies.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, in his remarks, referred to the August 2025 decision of the Court of Arbitration, stating that the ruling reaffirmed that the Indus Waters Treaty remains fully in force.
He emphasized that the treaty’s dispute resolution mechanisms are binding in nature and warned that undermining such agreements could set a dangerous precedent for global arrangements concerning shared resources, border management, and confidence building measures worldwide.
