Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) contacted X on multiple occasions over several years, requesting the suspension of Imran Khan’s account but social media platform largely rejected these requests.
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Jan 22nd, 2026) A report submitted to the Islamabad High Court has revealed the government’s repeated but largely unsuccessful attempts to get former PTI chairman Imran Khan’s X (formerly Twitter) account blocked.
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) contacted X on multiple occasions over several years, requesting the suspension of Imran Khan’s account. However, the social media platform largely rejected these requests.
The PTA report stated that the first request was sent on August 21, 2022. Another request followed on April 18, 2024, citing sentences in the Toshakhana, Cypher, and Aadat cases to justify the account suspension. On November 27, 2025, the PTA requested that 47 of Imran Khan’s tweets be blocked, but only one tweet was removed.
The report also highlighted that social media companies were asked to register with Pakistani authorities and appoint local representatives. However, the platforms did not comply, remaining registered in their home countries and not recognizing Pakistan’s regulations.
It further said that social media companies handle complaints from other countries according to their own laws rather than Pakistan’s.
The PTA submitted the report before the court in connection with the proceedings regarding the government’s efforts to block Imran Khan’s X account.
