Notification for his appointment has been issued, and NA speaker has directed that Gazette notification be sent to President and Prime Minister’s Secretariat
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Jan 16th, 2026) Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the leader of the Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Ain Pakistan, has been appointed as the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly.
The notification for his appointment has been issued, and the Speaker has directed that the Gazette notification be sent to the President and Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
The National Assembly session began under the chairmanship of Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. At the outset, the Speaker announced that there would be no question hour on that day. He then called the Chief Whip to his chamber and stated, "Ameer Dogar, please come to my chamber, you will be given the notification." Afterward, the Speaker officially announced the appointment of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the Opposition Leader.
During the session, the Pakistan Nursing Council Ordinance was introduced in the National Assembly, presented by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar. Additionally, the Export Development Fund Amendment Bill 2026, the Import and Export Act Amendment Bill, the Pakistan Telecommunication (Reorganization) Amendment Bill, and the Life Insurance Nationalization Amendment Bill were also presented in the Assembly.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar also introduced the Export Development Fund Amendment Bill 2026, the Export-Import Bank of Pakistan Amendment Bill 2026, the Pakistan Telecommunication (Reorganization) Amendment Bill, the Federal board of Intermediate and Secondary education Amendment Bill, the Alternative Dispute Resolution Amendment Bill, and the Islamabad Capital Territory Ownership and Administration Bill in the National Assembly.
All the bills were presented by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar.
Later, a delegation from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by Chairman Barrister Gohar, arrived at the Speaker’s office. During a conversation, Barrister Gohar mentioned, "The Speaker had called us today, and we are here to collect the notification. This was our right, as the position of Opposition Leader has been vacant since August 7."
The Speaker handed the notification to Barrister Gohar, who congratulated Achakzai. He said, "We all signed on Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s form, and today he has been elected as the Leader of the Opposition."
Meanwhile, the National Assembly Secretariat sent a letter to the Printing Corporation for the issuance of the Gazette notification, instructing that the notification of Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s appointment as the Opposition Leader be issued. The Gazette notification has been directed to be sent to the Prime Minister and President’s Secretariats, the Cabinet, and the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
The letter further stated that the Gazette notification should also be sent to the relevant departments of the Senate Secretariat and National Assembly Secretariat, as well as to 15 other institutions, including the President and Prime Minister’s Secretariats.
