Venezuelan pro-democracy leader win prize for her struggle for democracy, human rights and political freedoms
Oslo: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Oct 10th, 2025) Venezuelan pro-democracy leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious honors.
The announcement was made during a formal ceremony in Oslo by Jörgen Watenfried, head of the Royal Swedish academy of Sciences. He said the award recognizes Machado’s unwavering struggle for democracy, human rights and political freedoms.
“Her movement has revitalized democratic values across Venezuela and Latin America,” he added.

The Nobel Peace prize is presented annually to individuals or organizations that contribute significantly to international cooperation, reducing military tensions, or promoting peace. This year, Machado was honored for her leadership among thousands of activists who have stood against political repression, human rights violations, and restrictions on freedom of expression.
Machado has previously received numerous international accolades, including the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.
Named after Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, the Nobel Prize was established through his will to recognize individuals who advance science, literature, and peace.
