Peru President Dina Boluarte removed from office after string of scandals

Boluarte faces multiple allegations over past year, including corruption, mishandling public protests and involvement in a deadly crackdown that killed more than 60 demonstrators

LIMA: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Oct 10th, 2025) Peruvian President Dina Boluarte was ousted from office on Thursday following a decisive congressional vote, marking another turbulent chapter in the country’s political history. Lawmakers from across the political spectrum supported her removal, citing “permanent moral incapacity” and her failure to address crime and civil unrest.

Boluarte, who became Peru’s first female president in 2022 after Pedro Castillo’s arrest and impeachment, did not attend Thursday’s vote. She has faced multiple allegations over the past year, including corruption, mishandling public protests, and involvement in a deadly crackdown that killed more than 60 demonstrators.

Additional accusations against Boluarte included accepting luxury gifts such as Rolex watches, transporting a fugitive politician in an official vehicle, and abandoning her duties in 2023 for cosmetic surgery without notifying Congress. She maintained that the procedure was medically necessary, a claim disputed by the surgeon.

Following her removal, Congress President José Jerí Oré, 38, will serve as interim president and is tasked with calling new elections as mandated by the constitution.

Boluarte’s ouster continues a pattern of political instability in Peru, where seven of the last eight presidents have faced legal challenges or impeachment over corruption, abuse of power, or human rights violations. The country has also been grappling with a surge in crime and security challenges, which recently prompted a state of emergency in Lima and Callao.

Even the parties that previously backed Boluarte including Popular Renewal and Popular Force joined the move to remove her, signaling broad political consensus against her leadership.
