Pakistan weather; PDMA issues alert for Monsoon preparedness

Met Office predicts light to heavy rainfall at various locations in Islamabad, surrounding areas

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 7th, 2025) Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rain across several regions of the country, including most parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab as well as select areas of Balochistan and Sindh.

In response, the Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) have issued weather alerts and urged citizens to take necessary precautions.

Rain forecast by region

According to the Met Office, Islamabad and surrounding areas are expected to remain mostly cloudy, with light to heavy rainfall likely at various locations.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rainfall is expected in several districts including Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Swabi, Peshawar, Mardan, Hangu, Kurram, Kohat, Karak, Waziristan, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan. Some areas may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.

In Punjab, districts including Murree, Galiyat, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, Chakwal, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Kasur, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Mandi Bahauddin, Chiniot, Okara, Sahiwal, Jhang, and Toba Tek Singh are expected to receive rainfall. Additional showers are forecast for Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan, Khanewal, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Kot Addu, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ghazi Khan. Heavy downpours are expected in some areas.

In Sindh, most districts are likely to remain hot and humid. However, isolated rainfall is possible in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Badin, Thatta, Mithi, Sanghar, Dadu, Sukkur, Jacobabad, Larkana, and Kashmore. Light showers and drizzle may occur in Karachi and other coastal areas.

Balochistan is also expected to see hot and humid conditions, though isolated rainfall is likely in Barkhan, Kohlu, Musakhel, Dera Bugti, Loralai, Bolan, Zhob, Ziarat, Quetta, Kalat, Mastung, Khuzdar, Awaran, Kharan, and Lasbela. Some areas may experience intense downpours.

Lahore, Punjab specific update

The Met Department has predicted light to heavy rainfall in Lahore, with light showers during the day and heavier rain expected at night. The temperature in the city is forecast to range between 26°C and 31°C.

Following the forecast, WASA Lahore has put all operational teams on high alert. Managing Director WASA stated that staff will remain active in the field to ensure smooth drainage of rainwater during and after the showers.

Rainfall Data and Monsoon Advisory

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has released updated figures for rainfall in various districts of Punjab:

Layyah (Karor): 37 mm

Kot Addu: 31 mm

Dera Ghazi Khan: 29 mm

Bhakkar: 23 mm

Mianwali: 8 mm

Lahore: 7 mm

Narowal: 6 mm

Kasur: 3 mm

Mandi Bahauddin: 2 mm

Multan: 1 mm

Rainfall was also recorded in Sialkot, Mangla, Toba Tek Singh, Gujrat, Bahawalnagar, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, and Gujranwala.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia warned that the ongoing monsoon spell is expected to continue until July 10, with widespread heavy rainfall likely in the next 24 hours across much of Punjab.

Public safety advisory

DG PDMA has advised the public to take the following safety measures:

Avoid staying in fragile or mud-constructed buildings during storms.

Seek shelter in safe locations during thunderstorms and lightning.

Drive cautiously during rain and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.

In case of emergency, contact the PDMA Helpline at 1129.

The authorities urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories as the monsoon system intensifies.
