Young Indian woman commits suicide after dowry harassment despite lavish gifts

National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken notice and demanded a detailed report within 72 hours

CHENNAI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 1st,2025) A heartbreaking case of dowry harassment has emerged from Tamil Nadu, where a newlywed woman died by suicide after allegedly facing sustained abuse from her husband and in-laws—despite receiving a luxury car and hundreds of gold coins as dowry.

The police said that 27-year-old Rithanya was married to Kavin Kumar in April this year. As part of the dowry arrangement, her family provided 300 gold coins and a Volvo car worth ₹7 million (INR 70 lakh). An additional 200 gold coins were also promised.

However, just two months into the marriage, Rithanya reportedly began facing mental and physical abuse over dowry demands. Family sources allege she was subjected to cruel treatment for minor mistakes, leading to severe psychological distress.

On June 29, Rithanya left her home under the pretext of visiting a temple. Instead, she purchased insecticide and consumed it while sitting in her car. Passersby noticed her in distress—foaming at the mouth and unconscious—and immediately rushed her to the hospital. Despite medical efforts, she could not be saved.

Police have since registered a case against her husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. All three have been taken into custody.

Following the incident, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken notice and demanded a detailed report within 72 hours.

The case has reignited conversations around the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in India, despite legal prohibitions under the Dowry Prohibition Act. Social activists have called for stricter enforcement and greater awareness to prevent such tragedies.
