MUMBAI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 18th, 2024) Former Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, and Suresh Raina have been accused by social media users of mocking disabled individuals.
The former Indian cricketers made a video celebrating their victory in the World Championship of Legends, which led to a complaint being filed against them.
Harbhajan Singh shared a video on Instagram featuring himself, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, and Gurkeerat Mann acting as if they were limping to the popular song “Toba Toba” from the soon-to-be-released film “Bad news.” In the caption, Harbhajan Singh tagged actor Vicky Kaushal and singer Karan Aujla, stating that their bodies were aching after 15 days of Legends Cricket.
When the video went viral, social media users heavily criticized the Indian cricketers, accusing them of mocking both Pakistani players and disabled individuals.
Some users claimed that the Indian cricketers were mocking senior Pakistani players who were part of the Legends League, while others said it could be offensive to disabled individuals.
India’s para-badminton star Manasi Joshi expressed her anger, calling the cricketers’ actions “insensitive.” She wrote that she expected responsible behavior from players like them and that this was no joke. She added that such videos encourage people to mock disabled individuals and that it would lead to harassment of many disabled children and youths.
Manasi Joshi mentioned Harbhajan and Suresh, stating she was deeply disappointed to see them engage in such behavior.
Harbhajan’s apology:
However, as the matter became serious, Harbhajan Singh deleted the video and shared an apology on social media. He stated that their intention was not to hurt anyone’s feelings and clarified that they respect every individual and community. He explained that the video aimed to show their physical condition after playing cricket continuously for 15 days.
Complaint filed against cricketers:
Following the viral “Toba Toba” video, Arman Ali, Executive Director of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), filed a complaint against the cricketers, citing a violation of Section 92 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
