ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Feb 15th, 2024) Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced on Thursday that Omar Ayub Khan, the party's Secretary General, has been chosen as their nominee for the position of Prime Minister of Pakistan.
The sources said that Imran Khan, the founder of PTI, who is behind the bars nominated Omar Ayub Khan.
The development took place after Ali Amin Gandapur was nominated for the office of chief minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the sources, Khan nominated Omar Ayub for staying loyal during the difficult times for the party.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former Speaker of the National Assembly Asad Qaiser stated that Omar Ayub would be their candidate for the prime minister office while the candidate for Speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly would be Aqib Khan.
Speaking to the media alongside Barrister Saif after meeting with PTI founder Imran Khan outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Asad Qaiser stated that the party's Secretary General Omar Ayub was nominated for the position of Prime Minister. He expressed hope that their Prime Minister would emerge from the National Assembly.
He said that they would fight a legal battle in the Assembly, every child knew that PTI's mandate was stolen, and all political parties have been tasked with talking to PTI.
Asad Qaiser said that our mandate was stolen in the election, the worst election in Pakistan's history, and all political situations are before PTI.
He said that they would contact the parties protesting against rigging.
In the recent general elections, Omar Ayub Khan, the independent candidate from NA-18 Haripur, emerged victorious in the National Assembly constituency by securing 192,948 votes, while his rival, Babar Nawaz, the candidate of the Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), managed to secure 112,389 votes.
Omar Ayub Khan is the grandson of Gohar Ayub Khan, the former Speaker of the National Assembly and the former military ruler General Ayub Khan. He joined PTI on February 17, leaving the Pakistan Muslim League –Nawaz (PML-N).
On September 11, 2018, Omar Ayub Khan was appointed Federal Minister for Energy in Imran Khan's government. Subsequently, on April 16, 2021, Omar Ayub was appointed Minister for Economic Affairs.
On May 27, 2023, after Asad Umar's resignation, Imran Khan appointed Omar Ayub Khan as the party's new Secretary General.
