Damascus Urges UN to Condemn Deadly Terrorist Attacks in Syria's North - Foreign Ministry

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has called upon the United Nations to condemn the terrorist attacks that inflict civilian casualties in northern Syria, the ministry said in a statement seen by Sputnik on Tuesday

DAMASCUS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th June, 2019) The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has called upon the United Nations to condemn the terrorist attacks that inflict civilian casualties in northern Syria, the ministry said in a statement seen by Sputnik on Tuesday.

The ministry sent two letters - to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and President of the UN Security Council Mansour Al-Otaibi. In these letters, Damascus provided the information on the terrorists' attacks, which killed dozens of civilians in the Syrian towns of As Suqaylabiyah, Muhradah, Kafr Zita and others.

"Syria calls upon the UN Security Council and the UN secretary-general to immediately and firmly condemn these terrorist attacks against civilians and support Syria in its fight against terrorism," the ministry stated.

Damascus urged the organization to punish those responsible for these attacks and take legal action against them in accordance with the UN resolutions.

In a statement, Damascus notes that a number of countries in the UN Security Council, in particular, the United States, "continue to spread false information" claiming that "the Syrian army and its allies are allegedly bombing civilian targets in Idlib province" and other areas.

Syria has been ravaged by the eight-year war that began in 2011. The nation is being split by the fighting between the pro-government troops, which support the Damascus government, the militants from various groups, which oppose the administration led by Syrian President Bashar Assad, and Islamic State (IS, terrorist group banned in Russia). The latter has lost its positions in recent years due to massive operations carried out by the Syrian government. In 2015 Russia assisted the Damascus troops in their fight against terrorism and achieved major success, destroying IS militants and their infrastructure.

The conflict in the country produced over 5 million refugees and over 6 million internally displaced people. Over 13 million Syrians, nearly half of them children, require humanitarian assistance.
