Senate passes resolution on withdrawal of references against the judges

A resolution seeking withdrawal of references against judges of superior judiciary has been passed in Senate with majority vote

ISLAMABAD (Pakistan Point News / Online - 31st May, 2019) A resolution seeking withdrawal of references against judges of superior judiciary has been passed in Senate with majority vote.The resolution was presented by opposition leader Raja Zafar ul Haq. Senate met under chairman Sadiq Sanjarani.The opposition took the plea in its resolution that references against judges are attack on superior judiciary. Bar Council has also opposed these references.

The opposition demanded through this resolution government should withdraw these presidential references against judges.Treasury benches opposed this resolution.Shibli Faraz said treasury benches have not been taken into confidence before tabling this resolution. Government has objection over bringing the resolution in dead of night.Treasury benches resorted to pandemonium during the passage of resolution and despite it the house passed the resolution asking the government to scale back the references .

The Senate earlier rejected the bill seeking enhancement in the strength of judges in Islamabad High Court (IHC). Opposition opposed the bill.The treasury benches said that when government and opposition had approved the bill in standing committee then there stands no justification to oppose the bill. If this has to be done then the standing committees should be disbanded.Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar said government wants to induct judges of its own choice in Supreme Court and High Court. Therefore, they can not support this bill.The Senate session was adjourned indefinitely.
