UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 22nd May, 2019) The United Nations has not been able to independently confirm the recent reports of the chemical weapons use in Syria's Idlib province on Sunday, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said during a press briefing.

"We have seen the media reports alleging chlorine attacks in northwest Syria earlier on May 19. We are not able to independently verify this information," Dujarric told reporters on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the US State Department said that Washington was gathering information regarding an alleged chlorine attack in northwest Syria on May 19. It added that the United States saw signs that the Syrian government might be using chemical weapons.

However, earlier on Wednesday, US Special Representative for Syria James Jeffrey said in a congressional testimony that the United States cannot confirm recent reports that chemical weapons were used in Idlib.

On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry said militants of the Nusra Front terror group (banned in Russia) were preparing to stage a false-flag provocation in Syria's Idlib province to frame the Russian Aerospace Forces and the Syrian army for allegedly attacking civilians with chemical weapons.

The head of the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation, Maj. Gen. Viktor Kupchishin, said Tuesday that terrorists operating in the Idlib de-escalation zone possess a significant amount of poisonous substances with which they fill the munitions to use in staged provocations aimed at accusing the Syrian army of "chemical attacks" against the civilian population.
