UN Chief Condemns Rocket Attacks From Gaza Strip, Urges To Exercise Restaint - Spokesman

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th May, 2019) UN Secretary Generaln Antonio Guterres deplores the recent rocket launches at Israel from Gaza Strip and calls on all parties involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and de-escalate tensions, UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement on Sunday.

"He [Guterres] condemns in the strongest terms the launching of rockets from Gaza into Israel, particularly the targeting of civilian population centres. He urges all parties to exercise maximum restraint, immediately de-escalate and return to the understandings of the past few months," Dujarric said.

The latest escalation of tensions between Israel and the Gaza Strip started on Saturday. The Israel Defense Forces said on Sunday that Israeli forces had hit 320 targets in the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours in response to over 600 rockets fired by Palestinians at Israel. The conflicting sides continue to attack each other.

The exchange of fire has broken the Cairo-mediated truce, which lasted more than a month and stipulated reduction in bombardment in exchange for easing the enclave's blockade by Israel.
