Russia's Vershinin, EU Commissioner Discuss Human Rights Violations In Ukraine - Ministry

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th April, 2019) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin drew the attention of Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Dunja Mijatovic to systematic human rights violations in Ukraine and dissemination of neo-Nazism in some European states, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

"The Russian side expressed concern over aggressive nationalism and neo-Nazism spreading in some Council of Europe member states, as well as problems faced by national minorities in most EU countries. The Commissioner's attention was drawn to systematic human rights violations in Ukraine," the Foreign Ministry said.

In this regard, the Russian side called on Dunja Mijatovic to contribute to solving these problems in Europe, the ministry stressed. During the talk, a wide range of issues of Russian-European interaction in the human rights field was also discussed. Vershinin reaffirmed Russia's focus on developing a mutually respectful and depoliticized dialogue with the Council of Europe in the field of human rights protection.

According to the UN report on the human rights situation in Ukraine, there were 315 human rights violations documented during period from November 16, 2018, to February 15, 2019. This represents an increase of violations documented during the previous reporting period of August 16 to November 15, 2018.

Sergey Vershinin met with Dunja Mijatovic on April 3 during her introductory visit to Russia that will end on April 5.
