"They reaffirmed the longstanding US-Philippines alliance, discussing ways to improve cooperation on regional security and counterterrorism," Palladino said Thursday. "The Secretary and President Duterte also exchanged views on ongoing efforts to achieve the denuclearization of North Korea."

Pompeo arrived in the Philippine capital for a two-day visit during which he is expected to conduct meetings with Duterte and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Teodoro Locsin, Jr.

The State Department said earlier that Pompeo will reiterate Washington's support for the security of the Philippines during his visit to the country.

Earlier on Thursday, the second high-level summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un finished in Hanoi with no agreement reached. Trump said he decided to walk away from the summit in the Vietnamese capital after the North Korean leader demanded a full sanctions relief.
