Kosovo President Suggests Suspending Tax On Serbian Imports

BELGRADE (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th February, 2019) Hashim Thaci, the leader of Serbia's breakaway Kosovo province, said on Friday he was open to suspending tariffs on Serbian imports under US pressure.

The self-proclaimed republic imposed tariffs on Serbia-made goods last November after accusing it of a campaign to deny Kosovo membership of Interpol, an international police agency.

"The US administration has urged Kosovo authorities to overcome the emerging differences with regard to import tariffs on Serbia and Bosnia ... I do not think that taxes will be abolished but there has to be a way to stop them temporarily," he told reporters, as quoted by Radio kiM.

Thaci spoke after returning from a trip to Washington. He said tens of millions of Euros worth of losses incurred by Serbia were insignificant in comparison with the damage that Kosovo's "priceless" US ties sustained from the spat with Serbia.

The Albanian-majority region of Kosovo break away from Serbia in 2008. It has not been recognized by Russia, China, Israel, Iran and several EU nations. It is seeking EU membership but Brussels wants it to settle differences with Serbia first.
