MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 21st January, 2019) Russia is hoping for continuity in the work of the new UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, and is counting on his experience, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Monday at the meeting with the envoy.

"Clearly, we greatly appreciate the cooperation of the countries of Astana format with the UN for moving forward the political process in accordance with 2254 UNSC resolution. We count on the continuity, on your work experience in both the organizations of your motherland, and the international organizations, including the UN," Lavrov said.

Pedersen, who served as Norway's permanent representative to the United Nations in the past, was appointed the new envoy for Syria last year after his predecessor Staffan de Mistura said he would step down.
