BELGRADE (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th January, 2019) The aircraft of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who arrived in Serbia earlier in the day, was escorted by MiG-29 fighter jets in the republic's skies, a Serbian presidential administration spokesperson said on Thursday.

"These were the planes supplied earlier by Russia to Serbia within the framework of defense industry cooperation," the spokesperson said.

Before the Russian president's Il-96 landed at the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, three MiG-29s of the Serbian Air Force flew over the runway.

Russia supplied six MiG-29 jets to Serbia in October 2017 as part of a deal announced in December 2016.

The MiG-29 is a twin-engine jet fighter aircraft, first developed in the Soviet Union in the 1980s, which is currently used in over two dozen countries across the world.
