Russia Lower House Passes Bill Recognizing Foreign NPOs Undesirable Over Election Meddling

Russia's lower house on Tuesday passed the bill on recognizing the activities of foreign nonprofits (NPOs) engaged in interference in Russian elections undesirable.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 18th December, 2018) Russia's lower house on Tuesday passed the bill on recognizing the activities of foreign nonprofits (NPOs) engaged in interference in Russian elections undesirable.

The draft amendment to the Federal law has been submitted to the State Duma in early May of this year by the representatives of four parliamentary groups.

The authors of the project propose to recognize undesirable the activity of a foreign organization if it, among other things, promotes or hampers "the nomination of candidates, lists of candidates, the election of registered candidates, the initiation of a referendum initiative and holding a referendum, the achievement of a certain result in elections, referendum (including other forms of participation in election campaigns, referendum campaigns, with the exception of participation in election campaigns, referendum campaigns as foreign ( international) observers)," according to the bill.

The Russian legislation currently recognizes as undesirable the activity of a foreign or international non-governmental organization that poses threat to the fundamentals of the constitutional system, the national defense capability or state security.
