Abkhazia Accepted About 800 Syrian Refugees - President

Abkhazia has accepted about 800 refugees from Syria and created favorable environment for their integration into the society, Abkhazian President Raul Khadzhimba told Sputnik in an interview.

SUKHUM (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) Abkhazia has accepted about 800 refugees from Syria and created favorable environment for their integration into the society, Abkhazian President Raul Khadzhimba told Sputnik in an interview.

"Initially, about 700-800 people came to [Abkhazia]. We tried to solve the issues relating to their accommodation, and create opportunities to help them adapt to our society," Khadzhimba said.

He added that the Syrian refugees were working in various fields and making efforts to successfully integrate their families into the Abkhazian society.

On September 4, the Abkhazian president and his Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad signed an agreement on cooperation and friendship between the two countries. On Thursday, December 6, the Abkhazian parliament ratified the agreement, prior to which it was endorsed by Syria on October 11.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups and terrorist organizations. According to the data provided by the UN Refugee Agency, the number of registered Syrian refugees totaled 5.6 million people as of November 29.
