US Senator Urges Prompt Extradition Of Huawei CFO From Canada To The US - Statement

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) The Canadian government should promptly extradite Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou to the United States after her arrest for potentially violating US sanctions against Iran, US Senator Marco Rubio said in a statement on Thursday.

"The arrest of Huawei's CFO by the Canadian government for potential violations of Iran sanctions is welcome and I urge prompt extradition to the United States," Rubio said.

Rubio said Canada should also reconsider Huawei's inclusion in any aspect of its 5G development, introduction and maintenance due to this incident.

Canadian media has reported that Meng was arrested on Saturday in Vancouver after an extradition request by the United States.

A bail hearing is expected to take place on Friday, however Beijing has demanded Meng's immediate release.

The United States reinstated sanctions against Iran following the country's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) - the Iran nuclear agreement - in May. The first round of sanctions came into force in August and the next round on November 5. The sanctions target not only Iran's economy but also those individuals and entities who continue to do business with Iran.
