TEL AVIV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th December, 2018) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Thursday that they informed the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) about the presence of a transboundary attack tunnel and requested its neutralization.
On Tuesday, Jonathan Conricus, the IDF's spokesman, announced that the Israeli army was launching an operation at the Israeli-Lebanese border in order to find and destroy Lebanon-based Hezbollah movement's cross-border tunnels.
"MG [Maj. Gen.] Strik showed the @UNIFIL_ Commander visuals of another attack tunnel dug underneath homes in the Shi'ite village of Ramyeh crossing into Israeli territory. He requested UNIFIL ensure the neutralization of the tunnel on the Lebanese side," the IDF statement reads.
Israel traditionally views Hezbollah's presence in Lebanon and Syria as a threat to its national security as the movement is backed by Iran, which is Israel's main rival in the region.
