Former German Male Nurse Pleads Guilty to Killing 100 Patients With Lethal Drug Doses

Former male nurse Niels Hoegel pleaded guilty on Tuesday to killing 100 patients in two German towns with lethal doses of drugs leading to cardiac arrests between 1999 and 2005.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 30th October, 2018) Former male nurse Niels Hoegel pleaded guilty on Tuesday to killing 100 patients in two German towns with lethal doses of drugs leading to cardiac arrests between 1999 and 2005.

Hoegel was first arrested in 2005 after being caught injecting a patient with a drug with deadly side effects. In 2008, he was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to seven and a half years in jail. His trial prompted German investigators to review all suspicious deaths that might have been related to Hoegel, and they revealed dozens of similar cases. In 2015, he was sentenced to life in prison for two murders and several attempted murders. Earlier this year, he was charged with as many as 97 other murders.

"Yes," Hoegel said as quoted by the Welt newspaper, asked by the judge whether he agreed with the charges against him.

According to Hoegel, his motive was to create medical emergencies and subsequently show off his life-saving skills to his colleagues. Another motive was boredom, he added.

Hoegel's death count, including those cases he has already been sentenced for, now include 36 patients in the town of Oldenburg and 64 in nearby Delmenhorst. The prosecution has pressed charges with testimonies from 23 witnesses and 11 toxicological and legal medical experts.

Before the trial started, Judge Sebastian Buehrmann asked all present to stand up for the minute of silence to pay tribute to Hoegel's victims.
