Peru to Allow Venezuelan Migrants to Enter Country Without Showing Passport - Reports

A court in Peru annulled on Friday a previous decision of the authorities, which demands from Venezuelan migrants to show passport while entering the country, media reported.

MEXICO CITY (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th October, 2018) A court in Peru annulled on Friday a previous decision of the authorities, which demands from Venezuelan migrants to show passport while entering the country, media reported.

According to Comercio news portal, the decision taken by the criminal court in Lima ruled that relevant ministries in Peru have 30 days to work out a strategic plan, which would regulate the free movement of Venezuelans in Peru and respect their rights.

The court ruled that the requirement to show passport is a measure that violates the right to free movement of Venezuelans.

In late August, the Peruvian authorities said the Venezuelan migrants would need a passport to enter the country. Similar requirement was adopted by Ecuador. Previously, citizens of the Union of South American Nations and the Andean Community, including Venezuelans, were able to cross into Peru or Ecuador with a national ID.

Venezuela is facing a political and economic crisis prompted by the fall of oil prices and the consequent fall of state revenue. Galloping inflation and shortage of goods have sparked mass protests across the country, while scores of Venezuelans are fleeing the tough situation abroad.

According to the UN Migration Agency, the flow of migrants from Venezuela increased more than tenfold over the past years from 89,000 in 2015 to 900,000 in 2017.
