First 'Truly' Driverless Cars to Appear on UK Roads in 3-4 Years - Transport Secretary

First self-driving cars are set to hit UK roads in the next three or four years, UK Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said on Monday at the Conservative Party conference.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st October, 2018) First self-driving cars are set to hit UK roads in the next three or four years, UK Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said on Monday at the Conservative Party conference.

"We are now rapidly approaching the era of the driverless car. I expect the first truly driverless cars to be on our roads within three or four years," Grayling said, as quoted by the Express newspaper.

The UK government will do everything to eliminate the use of cars on traditional fuel, but diesel ones will remain on the roads for a long time, the official noted.

"Newer diesel cars today are cleaner than ever before and of course there will be a role for diesel for many years to come as technology evolves," Grayling added.

In July, the UK government unveiled its Road to Zero Strategy, which aims to see at least 50 percent of new cars be ultra low emission by 2030 as part of the country's broader plans to become a world leader in the green technology revolution.
