Trump, Trudeau in Phone Call Agree to Keep in Touch to Move USMCA Forward - Ottawa

US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a phone call agreed to communicate regularly in order to make progress on a newly-negotiated trilateral trade agreement between the two countries and Mexico, the government of Canada said in a press release on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st October, 2018) US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a phone call agreed to communicate regularly in order to make progress on a newly-negotiated trilateral trade agreement between the two countries and Mexico, the government of Canada said in a press release on Monday.

"The two leaders welcomed the agreement reached last night between Canada and the United States," the release said. "The leaders agreed to keep in close touch and move the agreement forward."

Trump and Trudeau said the deal that replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) would make the two countries better partners and lead to the creation of additional jobs for the middle class, the release added.

The agreement was announced late Sunday after intense talks between US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland. The negotiators reached the deal shortly after Trump and Trudeau returned from the United Nations General Assembly, where they did not have an official meeting, but faced questions about the future of the trade accord.

Last week, Trump warned during a press conference in New York that he would impose new tariffs on Canadian automobiles, if Ottawa does not negotiate in a fair manner.

While the current NAFTA agreement has been in place since 1994, but Trump has attempted to renegotiate it since his election campaign in 2016. The United States, Canada and Mexico were engaged in talks since 2017, and the US-Mexican agreement was reached in late August.
