German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, welcomed the agreements on Idlib, reached by the Russian and Turkish leaders in Sochi, the German cabinet said.

Russian and Turkish leaders Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday agreed in Sochi to create by October 15 a demilitarized zone along the contact line of the armed opposition and government troops in the Syrian province of Idlib, and the defense ministers of the two countries signed a memorandum on stabilizing the situation in the Idlib de-escalation zone.

"Regarding Syria, the talk was about the situation after the agreement between President Putin and President Erdogan of September 17 on the establishment of a demilitarized buffer zone in the Idlib area. The chancellor welcomed efforts to prevent military escalation and protect civilians," the cabinet said.
