Seoul, Pyongyang May Open Liaison Office Next Week - Official

South and North Koreas may open a liaison office in the city of Kaesong in the North next week, the spokesman for the South Korean Unification Ministry said on Friday.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th September, 2018) South and North Koreas may open a liaison office in the city of Kaesong in the North next week, the spokesman for the South Korean Unification Ministry said on Friday.

"South and North Korea are now holding discussions on the opening date of the liaison office and other details. Late next week will likely be settled," Baik Tae-hyun said, as quoted by Yonhap news agency.

The most likely opening date is September 14, the agency reported, citing officials.

The two countries announced opening of the bureau in April, hoping that the move would facilitate civilian exchanges between the two countries. In August, the South Korean government said that the opening might be postponed amid US-North Korea tensions. However, the South Korean authorities have decided that the opening of this office would not be in breach of the international sanctions against North Korea imposed over its nuclear and missile tests.

South Korea's presidential security adviser Chung Eui-yong reportedly said Thursday that the two sides agreed to open the office ahead of the visit of President Moon Jae-in to North Korea, scheduled for September 18-20.
