US Lawmakers Threaten To Cut Aid To Guatemala For Expelling UN Anti-Corruption Official

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th September, 2018) US Congress will consider reducing aid to Guatemala if President Jimmy Morales does not reverse his decision to expel UN anti-corruption commission head Ivan Velasquez, US Congressmen Eliot Engel and Albio Sires said in a press release.

On August 26, Morales declared Ivan Velasquez persona non-grata and ordered him to leave the country immediately.

"We urge Morales to reverse his ill-advised decision," the release said on Tuesday. "If he is unwilling to do so, Congress must do everything in our power to appropriately adjust US assistance to the Guatemalan government."

Engel and Sires called this step "another major blow" in the fight against corruption in Guatemala. They also said that the government, which refuses to respect the rule of law and protects corrupt officials, is the real threat to the country's security.

Last week, media reported that Guatemala's attorney general and the UN-backed International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) were seeking to investigate Morales over suspected illicit campaign financing.
