UK Believes Russian Warnings of Chemical Attack in Idlib 'Fake Story '- Envoy to UN

The United Kingdom believes Russia's warnings about a possible impending chemical attack in the Syrian province of Idlib are nothing more than a fabricated story, UK Ambassador to the United Nations Karen Pierce told reporters on Tuesday.

When asked about the possibility that western countries could be preparing a chemical attack in Idlib, Pierce said, "This is an extraordinary fake news story."

On Monday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov warned that the United States was building up a group of cruise missile carriers in the middle East in order to react to the next staged chemical weapons attack in Syria.

Pierce, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of August, said the United Kingdom does not have any information about chlorine stocks being transferred to Idlib, calling such accusations a "Russian smoke screen."

The ambassador said it would be much more productive if Russian authorities in Syria brought utilized their persuasive powers to prevent the use of chemical weapons, as opposed to fabricating stories.

Russia's Defense Ministry has warned that the leader of the Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group, which is affiliated with the Al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat Nusra terror organization (banned in Russia), is planning a chemical attack against civilians in Idlib in order to provoke western nations into retaliating against Damascus.
