Majority of Americans Not Ready to Impeach Trump - Poll

The majority of the American public is not ready for Congress to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump despite last week's damaging plea agreement of his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, a new online poll showed on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th August, 2018) The majority of the American public is not ready for Congress to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump despite last week's damaging plea agreement of his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, a new online poll showed on Tuesday.

The Axios/SurveyMonkey poll, released on Tuesday, indicated that 56 percent of Americans do not want Congress to start impeachment, while the remaining 44 percent are ready for such a step.

The poll results also highlighted the importance of party affiliation when it comes to impeachment. While 79 percent of Democratic voters said they would like to see Congress begin impeachment, only 8 percent of Republican expressed the same sentiment.

On the question of whether to believe Cohen, who admitted to transgressions such as paying women to stay silent about their alleged affairs with Trump, 64 percent of respondents said they do. Along party lines, the split is 93 percent on the Democratic side and 38 percent on the Republican side.

Cohen admitted under oath last Monday that Trump knew about the money paid to former pornography star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence about having an affair.

Cohen pleaded guilty the following day to five counts of tax evasion, one count of making a false statement to a bank and two campaign finance violations.

The online media outlet Axios pointed out that the impeachment numbers of former US President Richard Nixon did not reach a majority until right before his resignation.

The results were obtained via a SurveyMonkey online poll conducted from August 22-24 among 4,362 adults in the United States, according to Axios. The modeled error estimate for the full sample is plus or minus 3.0 percentage points.
