CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th August, 2018) Iraqi President Fuad Masum issued on Monday a decree calling on the newly elected parliament of the country to hold its first session on September 3, the president's administration reported.

During their first session, the lawmakers will elect the parliamentary speaker and speaker's two deputies. The parliamentarians will later elect a new president and task the leader of the largest bloc to form a government as prime minister.

The first parliamentary election since the defeat of the Islamic State's terrorist group (banned in Russia) was held on May 12. However, the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq ratified the result of the election just on August 19. Due to reports about multiple violations during the election, a manual recount was launched in early July and completed in early August.

Following the recount, the preliminary results of the election have slightly ever changed, with the Sairun Alliance, backed by the prominent Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr, coming first with 54 seats in the 239-seat parliament. The Sairun Alliance is followed by the Conquest Alliance led by Hadi Amiri, with 48 seats, while Prime Minister Haider Abadi's Victory Alliance closes the top three list with 42 seats.
