Damascus Calls West's New Statement On Chemical Weapons In Syria 'Disinformation'

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 23rd August, 2018) The United Kingdom, the United States and France in a new statement about the use of chemical weapons in Syria have once again resorted to a campaign of threats and "disinformation," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of a 2013 chemical weapons attack in Syria's Eastern Ghouta, the three Western countries released a statement warning that they "will respond appropriately to any further use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime." The statement also called on Assad's supporters to "use their influence to uphold the global norm against chemical weapons use."

"Western countries, in particular the United States, the United Kingdom and France, have once again resorted to a campaign of threats, hypocrisy and disinformation, whose anti-Syrian goals and continuation of support of terrorist groups are known," the ministry said, as quoted by the Sana news agency.

According to the ministry, the statement was made because of the military achievements of Syrian government troops and their allies, which are leading to the defeat of "Western allies among terrorists."

Damascus condemns this statement and considers that it is aiming to justify the use of chemical weapons by terrorist groups, prolong the war against Syria and support the terrorist groups that are being defeated.

Following the largest chemical attack in August 2013 in Eastern Ghouta, which according to different estimations left up to 1,500 people killed, Damascus joined the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and agreed to destroy its stockpile under Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) oversight. In January 2016, the OPCW announced that all chemical weapons in Syria had been destroyed.
