German Public Prosecutor General Brings Charges Against Suspected Member of Taliban

The German Public Prosecutor General brought charges against a German citizen who is suspected of being a member of the Taliban Islamist group earlier in August, the body said on Friday in a statement.

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 17th August, 2018) The German Public Prosecutor General brought charges against a German citizen who is suspected of being a member of the Taliban Islamist group earlier in August, the body said on Friday in a statement.

"The Public Prosecutor General brought charges against German citizen Thomas K., 37, on August 8, 2018. The defendant is accused of being a member of the Taliban foreign terrorist organization as well as violating the War Weapons Control Act," the statement said, adding that Thomas K. was also suspected of attempted murder.

Thomas K. left Germany for Pakistan in August 2012 and joined the Taliban in spring of 2013 in the region of North Waziristan. According to the statement, he received special training, made explosives, studied possible targets for terror attacks as well as carried out a number of logistic tasks. For his work he received food and a monthly salary of 1,000 Pakistani rupees ($8).

The suspect is also said to have been preparing a suicide attack.

Thomas K. has further been accused of making propaganda materials to recruit new Taliban members in Germany. While preparing said materials, he took part in an attack on a Afghan military base to make footage of the clashes with the troops.

The defendant was captured during an Afghan security forces operation on February 2 and deported to Germany on April 25.
