Over 500,000 Children to Attend School in Syrian Aleppo Province in 2018 - Governor

Over 500,000 children will go to school this year in the Syrian northern Aleppo province, the provincial governor said on Thursday.

ALEPPO (Syria) (Pakistan Point news / Sputnik - 16th August, 2018) Over 500,000 children will go to school this year in the Syrian northern Aleppo province, the provincial governor said on Thursday.

"The new school year will begin soon, 1,350 schools, located in the city and its neighborhoods, will open their doors to children. The total number of schoolchildren will be 500,000," Hussein Diab told reporters.

Moreover, some 1,000 undergraduates would continue their studies in six local universities, including the University of Aleppo, the governor added.

"Despite the major damage caused by terrorist organizations, work on restoring Aleppos industrial infrastructure and ensuring the return of civilians to the peaceful life are underway," Diab pointed out.

The governor said earlier on Thursday that around 1.2 million Syrians had returned to the Aleppo province after it had been liberated from terrorists. Some 6 million people inhabited the region before the war, including some 2 million residents of the city of Aleppo.

According to Diab, there are currently 3 million people living in the province. The Syrian authorities are funding the restoration of the area, which is being done with Russias support.

Aleppo, once the most inhabited Syrian city, was a major war zone between 2012 and 2016 in the course of the Syrian war between the government forces and numerous opposition, militant and terrorist groups. The city was liberated from terrorists in December 2016.
