Security in Punjab prisons much better than other provinces: DIG Prisons

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Faisalabad, Rana Abdur Rauf has said that security in prisons of Punjab is much better than the jails of other provinces while a comprehensive reformation program has also been launched for the inmates of 9 prisons of Faisalabad region.

FAISALABAD,  (Pakistan Point News - 20th Jan, 2018) : Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Faisalabad, Rana Abdur Rauf has said that security in prisons of Punjab is much better than the jails of other provinces while a comprehensive reformation program has also been launched for the inmates of 9 prisons of Faisalabad region. Addressing a ceremony at Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) on Saturday, Rana Abdur Rauf explained in detail the importance of criminal administration and told that islam has declared a single murder as killing of the entire humanity.

He said that this verse of Holy Quran has complete philosophy to reform society as a single murder may trigger a chain of killing in addition to destroying many families economically and socially. The DIG said that criminal administered has three components including Police, Judiciary and prisons department. He said that the importance of prison has been increased manifold due to our prevailing socio-economic conditions.

“Prisons department has been entrusted task to isolate the criminals from rest of the society, in addition to reforming them so that could play a productive role after leaving the prison”, Rana Abdur Rauf said and added that society as a whole including business community must contribute its role in this reformation program. He said that jail superintendents of two local jails are also accompanying him and the objective of this visit is to convince the business community to play its pro-active role in this noble task.

About the administrative structure of prisons department, the DIG Prisons told that Faisalabad region has nine prisons including two high security central prisons in Mianwali and Faisalabad. The remaining jails are District prison Faisalabad and Borstal jail Faisalabad in addition to the district jails of Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sargodha, Bhakkar and Shahpur. Rana Abdur Rauf told that another high security jail is under construction in Mianwali.

He told that top of the list terrorists are kept in central jail Faisalabad and among these include terrorist who had attacked GHQ. He further stated that this prison has yet another distinction as 8 cynical terrorists convicted in carnage of Army Public school Peshawar were also hanged in this prison. Shabbir Hussain Chawla President FCCI welcomed the visit of jailers and assured that he along with his office bearer and executive committee will visit the local prisons to access their immediate needs.

However, he requested the jail officials to submit a summary about their requirements so that necessary funds could be arranged to fulfill their needs. He appreciated the involvements of prisoners in productive industrial activities and said that their products must be commercialized to get maximum profit. He also offered to sponsor a stall for the prisons department to showcase its products in Entrepreneur’s Festival to be held in the University of Agriculture Faisalabad.

Mr. Kamran Anjum Senior Superintendent central jail also addressed the meeting and told that there are 3500 convicted and hardened criminals against the capacity of 2085. Among these include 366 condemned and 700 narcotic criminals. He said that out of these, 600 are addicts and needs to be rehabilitated. He also explained the security measures and told that an additional ward of 25 beds has been added in the jail hospital enhancing its total capacity to 55-60 beds.

He also identified the various problems where he needs immediate help of the business community. Superintendent District Jail Sheikh Muhammad Afzal Javaid also addressed the meeting and told that this prison has 1650 under trial prisoners against the capacity of 934. He also pointed out various problems faced y the prisoners and staff of this prison. During this meeting Senior Vice President Sheikh Farooq Yousaf announced to donate four sewing machines while Jawad Asgar also assured to provide four power looms to the weaving factory of the jail. Assistant Director Wild Life Sheikh Abdul Waheed also offered to donate birds for the local prisons. Later, FCCI shields were presented to DIG Rana Abdur Rauf, Senior Superintendent Central Jail Kamran Anjum and Superintendent District Jail Sheikh Muhammad Afzal Javaid.
