ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint /Pakistan Point News-July 20th, 2026) !The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of an increased risk of river flooding, flash floods and urban inundation across parts of Pakistan as a powerful monsoon system, combined with a strong westerly wave, is expected to affect the country through July 23.
In its latest advisory, the disaster management authority said widespread moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast between July 20 and July 23, with Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and upper Punjab expected to receive the heaviest downpours.
The NDMA cautioned that persistent rainfall could trigger flash floods and hill torrents in mountainous and hilly regions, posing a serious threat to communities living near rivers, streams and vulnerable slopes. People have been urged to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and stay away from areas prone to flooding.
The authority also highlighted the possibility of rising water levels in River Chenab at Marala and the upper reaches of River Jhelum near Mangla, where flood surges may develop if rainfall intensifies. Provincial and district administrations have been instructed to closely monitor the situation and activate contingency plans where necessary.
The advisory further warned that heavy rainfall may overwhelm drainage infrastructure in urban centres, increasing the likelihood of waterlogging and urban flooding in low-lying neighbourhoods. Motorists have been advised to avoid driving through flooded roads, while residents are urged to keep away from overflowing drains and stormwater channels.
The NDMA has directed provincial disaster management authorities, rescue services and district administrations to remain on high alert. Emergency teams have been asked to ensure that rescue personnel, machinery and relief supplies are readily available for any potential emergency response.
Citizens have been encouraged to monitor official weather forecasts and flood advisories, follow the instructions of local authorities and take all necessary precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property until the current spell of heavy monsoon rains comes to an end.
