ISLAMABAD:(UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 30th, 2026) Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to visit Iran in the first week of July to attend the funeral prayers of Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the informed sources said on Tuesday.
Ayatollah Khamenei, who had led Iran since 1989, was killed in a strike on a high-level meeting in Tehran during the opening phase of the US-Israel conflict with Iran on February 28.
The latest reports said several members of his family, including his daughter, daughter-in-law and at least one grandchild, also lost their lives in the attack.
According to Iranian state media, the funeral is scheduled to be held on July 9 in Khamenei's hometown of Mashhad after three days of mourning ceremonies in Tehran, followed by a ceremony in the holy city of Qom.
His son, Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, who reportedly sustained injuries in the attack, has assumed the role of Iran's Supreme Leader but has not yet appeared in public.
Following his visit to Iran, Prime Minister Shehbaz is also expected to travel to Türkiye. The visit comes after Türkiye supported diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel.
Pakistan's ties with Iran have strengthened in recent months following Islamabad's diplomatic engagement during the regional conflict. Pakistan played a significant role in facilitating dialogue between the opposing sides, contributing to efforts that led to a ceasefire and the resumption of negotiations.
The United States and Iran have also acknowledged Pakistan's diplomatic role in promoting dialogue and helping ease tensions in the region.
