LAHORE:(UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-March 6th, 2026) The petrol pumps across Lahore have seen long queues as motorists rush to fill their tanks amid fears of fuel shortages following escalating tensions between Iran and the United States in the middle East.
Motorcyclists and car owners have flocked to fuel stations ahead of the Eid holidays, while some pumps have reportedly run out of petrol and refused to sell the commodity.
"I went to four different petrol stations and I was denied petrol," said Abdur Rehman, a resident of Gulshan Ravi. In response, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a high-level Federal cabinet committee, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, to closely monitor the energy market. The committee will review daily stocks of petrol and gas to ensure uninterrupted supply nationwide.
During its Monday meeting, the Finance Minister was briefed on the current fuel supply situation. The committee noted that global energy supplies have been affected due to tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, particularly over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and rising instability around the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.
Officials warned that if the situation persists, it could impact Pakistan’s energy supply system. To manage the situation effectively, the committee decided to hold daily meetings to track changes in the international market and monitor local fuel reserves in real time.
Finance Minister Aurangzeb emphasized that ensuring the uninterrupted availability of energy products across the country is the government’s top priority. He added that the committee will also manage price fluctuations resulting from global market changes through a pre-determined mechanism, ensuring that consumers are protected from sudden shocks.
The government has urged citizens to remain calm and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain steady fuel supplies ahead of Eid.
