Aleem Dar resigns from PCB selection committee over team management issues

Dar’s resignation comes in the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the Super Four stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which led to the team’s early exit from the tournament

KARACHI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-March 3rd, 2026) Renowned Pakistani cricket coach and PCB selection committee member Aleem Dar has resigned, citing concerns over the authority of head coach Mike Hesson and the silence of fellow committee member Aqib Javed.

Dar’s resignation comes in the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the Super Four stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which led to the team’s early exit from the tournament. According to sources, Dar was frustrated with the lack of accountability and decision-making power for selectors in the squad formation process.

Dar’s resignation has sparked debate over the role and authority of selectors within the PCB, highlighting tensions between selection committees and coaching staff, especially following Pakistan’s underwhelming performance at major international tournaments.

Close sources revealed that while senior selector Misbah-ul-Haq remained largely silent, Aqib Javed consistently supported coach Hesson’s decisions without raising objections. Dar reportedly felt that the selection committee announces Pakistan’s top 20 players, but the captain and coach often pick the “wrong 15,” with further errors occurring in the final playing eleven. In his view, selectors are left with little authority and only face public criticism.

During the World Cup, Dar had raised concerns about the inclusion of former captain Babar Azam and all-rounder Shadab Khan in the squad despite poor recent performances. However, Captain Salman Ali Agha and Aqib Javed did not contest these selections, leaving Hesson in full control of team decisions.

Dar had also recommended giving experienced wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan a chance at number six instead of Usman Khan, arguing that if underperforming players like Shadab Khan and Babar Azam could be included, Rizwan deserved another opportunity.

Expressing his reasons for stepping down, Aleem Dar said he has been honored through cricket but does not wish to work as a “puppet” without authority. “It is better for me to resign than to continue in a role where I cannot contribute meaningfully,” he said.
