LAHORE: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Feb 6th, 2026) Lahore once again came alive with the colours and spirit of Basant as the three-day festival officially began at midnight, filling the city’s skyline with colourful kites instead of stars.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari inaugurated the Basant celebrations by flying a kite from the rooftop at Delhi Gate.

The symbolic opening triggered scenes of jubilation across the city, with laughter, drumbeats and the traditional chants of “Bo-kata” echoing from rooftops.

The city’s atmosphere was charged with festivity as young people flew kites from rooftops, while crowds gathered on streets to watch kites soar, clash, and fall from the sky.

Women also played an active role in the celebrations, welcoming spring with henna-adorned hands, colourful attire, and traditional delicacies. Many were seen flying kites alongside family members, adding to the festive charm.

The streets and neighbourhoods across Lahore were decorated with kites, while the demand for kites and string surged despite rising prices. In several areas, kites reportedly became scarce due to high demand.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited Liberty Chowk to review Basant arrangements, met citizens, and directed motorcyclists to install safety rods as part of precautionary measures. Citizens thanked the CM for restoring the festival and appreciated the government’s arrangements.

To facilitate residents during the festival, authorities have decided to operate special bus services on various routes. According to the Road Transport Authority, the entire city will be covered through dedicated transport arrangements.

Meanwhile, Punjab CM’s Adviser Zeeshan Malik visited the Walled City, where he joined PML-N workers in flying kites to mark the start of the celebrations. Party workers welcomed him with enthusiastic slogans, while Zeeshan Malik actively participated in the festivities, chanting traditional “Bo-kata” slogans.

Rooftops in the inner city were decorated, and special food arrangements were made for guests, further enhancing the joy and colour of the Basant festival.
