Constitution allows scope to improve 18th Amendment: Rana Sanaullah

PM’s aide on political affairs says constitution provides a pathway for reforms if political parties reach consensus

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Jan 22nd, 2026) Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Thursday said that while the 18th Constitutional Amendment was passed with consensus, there remains constitutional space to improve it through renewed agreement among stakeholders.

Talking to a local private tv, Sanaullah said the entire Constitution provides a pathway for reforms if political parties reach consensus.

“Our position on the 18th Amendment should be discussed,” he said.

Commenting on the recent fire incident at Gul Plaza, he called for a thorough investigation to determine who approved the building’s floors and when the construction took place, stressing that full accountability must be ensured.

Referring to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Sanaullah alleged that party founder Imran Khan had used meetings to speak against the state and its institutions, adding that the Islamabad High Court had now laid down a clear procedure for such meetings.

On governance, the prime minister’s adviser said that empowering district governments was a constitutional requirement and essential for addressing public issues.

“Unless district administrations are strengthened, people’s problems will not be resolved,” he said.

Responding to a statement by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on the 18th Amendment, Sanaullah said the remarks reflected a personal opinion expressed on the National Assembly floor.

“Every member has the right to express their view. Khawaja Asif did not present it as party policy; it was his personal opinion,” he added.

Reiterating his stance, Sanaullah said the 18th Amendment was adopted through consensus, but improvements could also be made through the same process.

“There is constitutional space for reform, and our position on the amendment should be openly debated,” he said.
