NDMA says moderate to heavy snowfall likely in the high-altitude regions
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Jan 15th, 2026) The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert warning of severe cold conditions in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir until the end of January.
The NDMA said that temperatures are expected to drop significantly during the nights and early mornings in the coming days, with moderate to heavy snowfall likely in the high-altitude regions.
The authority warned that snowfall could disrupt road connectivity, transport services, and electricity supply.
In mountainous areas, heavy snowfall may increase the risk of avalanches and slippery roads, posing a danger to travelers.
The NDMA further noted that extreme cold and snow could particularly affect children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing illnesses.
Meanwhile, plains areas are expected to experience cold and dry weather, with fog likely in some regions.
The severe weather also poses a risk to crops and orchards.
The citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in mountainous areas and to equip their vehicles with snow chains when driving in snow-affected regions.
The NDMA also instructed provincial authorities and district administrations to take precautionary measures and ensure the availability of necessary machinery to respond to emergencies.
