Shubman Gill breaks silence on omission from ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad

Gill was left out of the 15-member T20 World Cup squad as selectors opted for more aggressive opening options in the shortest format

NEW DELHI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Jan 10th, 2026) India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has spoken publicly for the first time about his exclusion from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad, saying he respects the selectors’ decision and wishes the team success.

The reports suggested that Gill was left out of the 15-member T20 World Cup squad as selectors opted for more aggressive opening options in the shortest format. His recent T20 form was cited as a key factor, with Gill managing only 291 runs in his last 15 T20 matches, which ultimately led to his omission.

Speaking at a pre-series press conference, Gill said he firmly believes he is exactly where he is meant to be in his career and that no one can take away what is destined for him. He added that while every player dreams of representing the country at a World Cup and delivering match-winning performances, he fully respects the decision taken by the selectors and extends his best wishes to the T20 team.

Gill further clarified that his focus has now shifted to the upcoming three-match One Day International series against New Zealand. He said he would be working closely with senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the series to ensure strong performances for the national side.
