PM’s advisor on political affairs says opposition should accept the talks offer
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Jan 6th, 2026) Senator Rana Sanaullah, the advisor to the prime minister on political affairs, said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif offered negotiations to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after consulting his party leader Nawaz Sharif and the establishment but PTI Founder Imran Khan appeared unwilling to engage in talks.
“We have an idea that PTI founder Imran Khan is not interested in the talks,” said Rana Sanaullah while talking to a local private tv.
The PM’s aide while commenting on the Islamabad High Court’s procedure for meetings with PTI’s founder said the court had set clear guidelines stipulating that no political activities should follow such meetings.
He noted, however, that previous meetings often led to chaos, press conferences and confrontations.
He added that Salman Akram Raja had assured the court of compliance with the procedure. “If the procedure is followed and the law is respected, there is no obstacle to the meeting. If jail authorities are not complying with the High Court’s order, why doesn’t the court act?” he questioned.
Responding to a query about the appointment of the opposition leader, Rana Sanaullah emphasized that there should be no doubt regarding the government’s intentions.
He said the Prime Minister had extended a negotiation offer, but it was claimed that the government lacked the authority to engage. “The Prime Minister, after taking Nawaz Sharif and the establishment into confidence, offered negotiations. The opposition should accept it,” he added.
Rana Sanaullah further said the opposition now claims it would launch a movement while the government emphasizes talks. “The opposition believes its movement will succeed and fears the government may trap it. PTI’s founder’s confrontational stance with the state could prove detrimental,” he warned.
The senior PML-N leader concluded that the opposition can attempt a “wheel jam” protest on February 5, after which talks can resume. He reiterated that PTI Chairman Imran Khan does not want negotiations and avoids dialogue with the opposition while in government.
