Hanif Abbasi says revenue of Rs50 billion is expected in the first half of the 2025–26 fiscal year while by end of year Pakistan Railways is set to cross the Rs1 trillion revenue milestone for the first time in its history

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Dec 25th, 2025) Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has announced that surveillance cameras will be installed in passenger trains as part of ongoing efforts to improve safety, transparency, and service standards in Pakistan Railways.

Speaking while briefing the media on the performance of Pakistan Railways in 2025, the minister said the department generated more than Rs93 billion in revenue during the year.

He added that revenue of Rs50 billion is expected in the first half of the 2025–26 fiscal year while by the end of the year Pakistan Railways is set to cross the Rs1 trillion revenue milestone for the first time in its history.

Hanif Abbasi said the Safety Department has been upgraded to a full-fledged directorate, resulting in a significant reduction in railway accidents. He noted that the accident rate has declined from 0.09 percent to 0.04 percent, and no serious accident has occurred since the establishment of the Safety Directorate.

The minister said Rawalpindi has been transformed into the country’s first smart railway station, equipped with surveillance cameras and a modern security system. He added that other major stations will also be converted into smart stations in 2026, while cameras will be installed in trains as well.

He said Pakistan Railways upgraded eight train rakes in just eight months, including Shalimar Express, Pak business Express, Lasani Express, and Faiz Ahmed Faiz Express. He added that all trains will be upgraded by December 2026.

Hanif Abbasi said railway stations in Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad have been upgraded, while the department has been fully digitised with all official work shifted to e-filing. He added that ATMs, digital vending machines (DVMs), and POS machines have been installed at major stations.

The minister said staff attendance has been computerised, making it mandatory for employees to report to offices to receive salaries. He added that 394 acres of encroached railway land were retrieved in 2025, and all remaining encroachments will be cleared by December 2026.

He further said three railway schools have been outsourced, while the remaining will be outsourced within the next six months. Eleven more trains are also set to be outsourced. Cleaning services at Lahore, Khanewal, Multan, Karachi, and Rawalpindi stations have been outsourced, ensuring round-the-clock cleanliness. Food quality at stations has also been improved, with food authorities authorised to conduct inspections at any time.

The railways minister said groundwork for the Karachi–Rohri track project is expected to begin in July.
