Murphy could make his home Test debut following the injury of veteran spinner Nathan Lyon

Murphy could make his home Test debut following the injury of veteran spinner Nathan Lyon. Lyon sustained an injury on the final day of the third Test while attempting to save a boundary, and Cricket Australia has confirmed that he will require surgery.
Murphy recently impressed by taking three wickets for Australia A against England Lions. In his seven Test matches, he has claimed 22 wickets at an average of 28.
Steve Smith will return to lead the side as captain after recovering from an ear problem. Regular captain Pat Cummins will not feature in the Boxing Day Test, following the team’s management plan.
Australia currently holds an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Ashes series, making Cummins’ participation in the Sydney Test uncertain. In Lyon’s absence, Australia may field without a specialist spinner, as they did at the start of the series.
