IHC disqualifies Justice Jahangiri from holding judge office in degree case

Karachi University Registrar informs court that university had conclusively cancelled Justice Jahangiri’s degree

ISLAMABAD - The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday disqualified Justice Tariq Jahangiri from holding the office of judge after concluding hearings in a long-running degree controversy.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Azam Khan heard the case.

The registrar of Karachi University appeared before the court and presented the original academic record related to the disputed degree while Justice Tariq Jahangiri did not appear in person.

During the proceedings, Karachi University Registrar informed the court that the university had conclusively cancelled Justice Jahangiri’s degree.

He stated that the principal of Islamia Law College had confirmed that Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri was never a student of the institution.

The registrar further told the court that Jahangiri had been caught cheating during examinations, following which the university’s unfair means committee imposed a three-year ban on him for cheating and threatening an examiner.

According to the registrar, although Jahangiri became eligible to reappear in examinations in 1992 after the ban period, he instead used a forged enrolment form to obtain the degree.

After verification from the relevant authorities, the university syndicate issued a formal declaration cancelling the degree on the basis of these findings.

During the hearing, counsel for Justice Jahangiri, Barrister Salahuddin, argued that the court should first hear the three petitions filed by his client.

Advocate Mian Dawood, however, maintained that even the enrolment forms submitted by Jahangiri were bogus and challenged him to produce LLB Part-I and Part-II mark sheets if his claim was genuine.

Responding to a query from the chief justice, the registrar categorically stated that Karachi University had finally cancelled the degree.

After completion of arguments, the court reserved its verdict and later announced the decision, declaring Justice Tariq Jahangiri disqualified from holding the office of judge.
