Punjab transport strike called off after suspension of traffic ordinance

Strike, which began late last night and continued until midday, caused severe inconvenience to commuters across province

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Dec 6th, 2025) The Pakistan Transport United Action Committee on Monday ended its wheel-jam strike across Punjab after the provincial government agreed to suspend the implementation of the new traffic ordinance.

The strike, which began late last night and continued until midday, caused severe inconvenience to commuters across the province.

With public transport off the roads, crowds at railway stations surged as citizens sought alternative travel options.

The deadlock broke after Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan held negotiations with committee chairman Ismatullah Niazi and members Tanveer Khan, Nabeel Mahmood, Malik Nadeem Hussain and other representatives.

Transporters had called the province-wide strike — including in Lahore — in protest against what they termed excessive fines under the new ordinance.

Following the talks, the transport minister announced that the traffic ordinance was being suspended.

“There will be no fines for now, and a committee has been formed to address the concerns raised by transporters,” he said.

Committee chairman Ismatullah Niazi confirmed the decision, saying transporters were calling off the strike based on the minister’s assurance. “Commercial vehicles will not be issued challans, and no vehicle will be impounded at police stations,” he added.

Meanwhile, President of the Pakistan Mini Mazda Association, Sher Ali Chaudhry, said the strike would continue unless a formal notification withdrawing the ordinance was issued.
