KMC report links BRT construction to child’s death in Karachi sewer

All excavated sections have since been filled under official supervision

KARACHI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Dec 3rd, 2025) The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has submitted its investigative report following the tragic death of a child who fell into an open sewer in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

The unfortunate incident took place near a private store close to NIPA Chowrangi. KMC forwarded the report to the Secretary of the Local Government Department after investigating the case.

The report by Senior Director Municipal Services Imran Rajput unveiled that under the instructions of the Mayor of Karachi, a search operation was conducted, and the child’s body was recovered from the Gulshan Town link drain.

The investigation confirmed that the accident was caused by ongoing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) construction work.

The report stated that BRT excavation had severely damaged the entire drainage system. Temporary 2-foot covers had been placed in an attempt to cover the sewers, which proved inadequate.

It further noted that a manhole near the Red Line project remained open, leading to the fatal incident. KMC clarified that such methods and substandard covers had never been used by the corporation, and the BRT authorities had not informed KMC before starting the work.

The report concluded that the child fell into the sewer due to negligence by both the private store management and BRT authorities. All excavated sections have since been filled under official supervision.
